Headlight restoration: see and be seen again

$50 eachCAD · per light · added to any package

Yellowed lenses aren't a cosmetic problem — they're a lighting problem. Oxidized polycarbonate scatters your low beams into a fog before they reach the road. We wet-sand the dead layer off, machine-polish the lens clear, and seal it against UV so it stays that way.

At your door across Metro Vancouver — see detailing in Vancouver. Prices in CAD, before GST and PST.

UV sealant — the step $20 kits skip

Can't fix internal condensation or cracked housings — those need parts, not polish. Details below, before you pay us anything.

Why lenses yellow

UV eats the factory coating. Then it eats the lens.

Modern headlights are polycarbonate — tough against stone chips, but soft against sunlight. The factory ships them with a thin UV-protective coating, and after years of sun, road grit and weather, that coating breaks down. The bare plastic underneath then oxidizes: first a light haze, then the familiar yellow, eventually a chalky crust.

The fix isn't a product you rub on — it's removing the oxidized layer entirely and giving the fresh surface the UV protection the factory coating used to provide. That's what the $50 each buys: the full sequence, not a shortcut.

The honest comparison

The $20 kit works. Briefly.

We'll say what the kit boxes won't: the polishing part of a DIY kit genuinely clears a lens. The reason kit results go yellow again in months is what happens after the polish.

DIY kit

~$20an afternoon of your elbow grease
  • Hand-sanding — hard to keep the surface even, easy to leave swirl haze
  • Polish clears the lens… and leaves bare, unprotected polycarbonate
  • Most kits include no real UV sealant — the step that made it yellow is back at work immediately
  • Typical result: clear for a season, yellowing again within months

Done Detail restoration

$50 eachCAD per light · pair takes ~40–60 min, at your door
  • Multi-stage wet-sand through graded grits — the whole oxidized layer off, evenly
  • Machine polish to optical clarity, no swirl haze
  • UV sealant cured onto the fresh surface — the protection the factory coating used to provide
  • Masked panels, checklist-verified finish, re-do free if it's not right
The plain verdict: if you enjoy the project, buy the kit — and buy a separate UV sealant to go with it, because that's the step that determines whether the fix lasts. If you'd rather it simply be handled, sealed and guaranteed while we're already detailing the car, that's what the $50 each is for.
The process

Sand. Polish. Seal. Check.

About 40–60 minutes for the pair, done alongside your package by the same crew.

1

Mask & assess

Surrounding paint and trim get taped off, and the tech confirms the damage is surface oxidation — not internal condensation — before any sanding starts.

2

Wet-sand in stages

Graded grits, coarse to fine, take off the entire oxidized layer evenly — the part no rub-on product can do.

3

Machine polish

A compound polish brings the sanded lens back to optical clarity, removing the sanding marks stage by stage.

4

UV-seal & verify

A UV sealant cures onto the fresh surface to slow re-oxidation. Then the walk-around: you look through the lens before we call it done.

Honest scope

What restoration fixes — and what it can't.

Sanding and polishing work on the outside of the lens. Some headlight problems live inside it, and no restoration reaches them. We check first and tell you before charging you.

Restoration fixes

  • Yellowing and amber discolouration from UV oxidation
  • Surface haze and cloudiness that dulls light output
  • Chalky, weathered lens texture
  • Fine surface scratches and wiper-grit scuffing

Restoration can't fix

  • Condensation or droplets inside the lens — that's a failed housing seal, and it needs a repair or replacement, not polish
  • Cracked or stone-broken housings — parts, not process
  • Yellowing on the inside surface of the lens (rare, but it happens) — inaccessible without opening the housing
  • Dim bulbs or electrical faults — that's a mechanic's visit

If the tech finds an internal problem at the masking stage, the add-on comes off your bill and we tell you what the right fix is. We don't sand a lens we know we can't save.

No reviews to show you yet. A guarantee instead.

We're new, and we won't dress this page up with reviews we haven't earned. What stands behind the $50 each: the finish is checklist-verified at the walk-around — you look through both lenses in daylight before the crew leaves, and haze or swirl left behind gets corrected on the spot.

If a checklist point turns out to have been missed after we're gone, we come back and re-do the work free. One number for crew and owner alike: . Consider it done.

Questions

Asked often, answered plainly.

With the UV sealant cured on, expect years rather than months — the sealant is doing the job the factory coating did when the car was new. Sun exposure and parking habits matter: a car that lives outside facing south will re-oxidize faster than a garaged one. When it eventually dulls again, a restoration can be repeated; the lens loses only a very thin layer each time.

Both — $50 each CAD covers the pair. Lenses age together, so restoring only one would leave the car mismatched and the other lens still scattering your light. Taxes (GST and PST) are extra, as with all our prices.

No, and we won't pretend otherwise. Condensation inside the lens means the housing seal has failed — the problem is behind the surface we work on. Restoration would clear the outside and change nothing about the fog within. That's a housing repair or replacement, and if we spot it during assessment we'll take the add-on off your bill and say so.

Noticeably, if oxidation was the problem. A hazed lens scatters and absorbs light that should be hitting the road — restoring clarity puts that light back where it belongs and makes your car easier for others to see. If your beams are still weak after restoration, the remaining suspects are aging bulbs or aim adjustment, which are quick jobs for a mechanic.

Add-ons ride along with a package visit — that's what keeps a $50 each job economical for a mobile crew. The smallest pairing is Refresh + headlights ($189 + $50 each = $159 CAD), which gets the car washed and the lenses restored in a single stop. While the crew's there, many owners also knock out pet hair or odor treatment in the same visit.
