Edmonton is the northernmost big city in Canada and it gets no chinooks to interrupt the season, which sets up a winter that punishes a car in a very specific way. The cold arrives and it stays — weeks at a stretch below minus twenty — so the salt and sand that go down do not wash off, they laminate. Residential streets here are not cleared to bare pavement either; they are bladed to a snowpack of roughly five centimetres, which means an Edmonton car spends most of the winter driving through a slurry of packed snow, traction sand and whatever the arterials were treated with. The City's anti-icing experiment is still a sore subject in this town for good reason: calcium chloride brine went down starting in the fall of 2017, councillors were buried in complaints about rusting vehicles and pockmarked garage pads, and City engineers found the calcium chloride mix harder on concrete and asphalt than plain salt before council moved to drop it. Whatever is on the road this season, your car is carrying it home.
The interiors here take it worse than the paint does, and almost nobody plans for that. Five months of boots dumping salt slurry into a footwell leaves a hard white tidemark climbing the carpet and into the seat base, and in a car that lives outside, that salt freezes, thaws and wicks all winter long. Extreme cold does the rest: vinyl and leather go brittle near minus thirty, door seals tear when a frozen door gets yanked, and dash plastics that have been cold-soaked for a week crack on the first genuinely warm day. Then summer arrives short and unusually bright — around seventeen hours of daylight at the solstice — and recent Alberta smoke seasons have coated everything in fine ash and loaded cabin filters that were never designed for it. Park under the mature elms along Glenora, Westmount or Highlands and you will collect aphid honeydew, which sets hard in a sunny week and starts etching clear coat if nobody deals with it.
For a mobile service, Edmonton is close to ideal geography. The mature core — Highlands, Westmount, Glenora, Old Strathcona, Garneau, Ritchie — is built around paved back lanes and rear detached garages, so the van parks in the lane and nobody gets blocked in. Street parking also comes back on weekends, from Friday at 7 p.m. to Monday at 7 a.m. A driveway, a back lane or an attached garage is unaffected the whole time. If your booking relied on the street and a phase lands on it, move the appointment online to the weekend window.

Brine containing calcium chloride went down starting in the fall of 2017, councillors were buried in complaints about rusting vehicles and pitted garage pads, City engineers found it harder on concrete and asphalt than plain salt, and council moved to end its use. But the underlying problem was never one chemical. It is that Edmonton gets no chinook to interrupt the winter, residential roads are bladed to a snowpack rather than bare pavement, and whatever is on the road stays laminated to your undercarriage for months. Check what is being used this season, then flush the undercarriage properly in spring regardless.
It does not have one written specifically about residential car washing, which is exactly why we will not quote you a clause that does not exist. What does exist: drainage here is operated by EPCOR under the City's Drainage Bylaw 18093 and the wastewater services bylaw, and EPCOR's stated principle is that nothing other than rainwater and snowmelt should enter the storm sewer, because catchbasins drain untreated toward the North Saskatchewan. It is close to the best case. Edmonton's mature neighbourhoods are built around paved back lanes with rear garages, so the van sits in the lane, out of traffic and not taking a neighbour's street spot. Two things to mention when you book: your lane's garbage and recycling day, and whether the lane is gravel rather than paved, which changes where we set up.
Yes, but it has to be extracted rather than shampooed. Five months of boots dumping salt slurry into a footwell drives chloride into the carpet backing, and the white line you see is the wicking mark left after the surface dried. Cleaning the pile alone leaves the salt in the backing, which is why it reappears. Proper hot-water extraction pulls it out and the recovery water comes back grey. Done once, properly, it does not return the way it did.
Aphid honeydew from the elms. Edmonton's older streets in Glenora, Westmount and Highlands still carry a heavy mature elm canopy, and through the summer those trees drip a sugary residue that lands on horizontal panels. Left through a hot week it bakes on and starts etching the clear coat, and pressure washing will not shift it once it has set. It needs a proper chemical decontamination, and a sealed or coated surface makes the next round rinse off instead of bonding.
