Metro Detroit is the deep end of the salt belt. Michigan agencies brine ahead of a storm and salt through it, and I-75, I-94, the Lodge, I-696 and I-96 all become a spray chamber for weeks at a time. Brine is the part people underrate: because it is already dissolved, it climbs into the pinch welds, the rocker seams, the lower tailgate edge and the pockets behind the wheel liners, and it stays wet in there long after the paint looks dry. Detroit's freeze-thaw cycle then does the rest — the same weather that shreds the pavement into potholes is the weather that drives salt solution through dozens of wet-dry cycles inside a body cavity over one winter. Inside the car it shows up as white bloom on carpet and mats that is not dirt and does not vacuum out. And there is a second, more local problem: on the southwest and downriver side, industrial and rail fallout settles as microscopic ferrous specks that bond into the clear coat and bloom rust-orange, which is why a white car here develops rust freckles that no wash removes.

Wash water that runs off a driveway into the gutter is a real contribution to that, and in the separated parts of the metro it is worse, because it reaches the river without treatment at all. Michigan brine is already in solution when it reaches your car, so it sits wet inside rocker seams and behind wheel liners for months. Flushing it out in February interrupts that, rather than letting it work until April. The cosmetic paint work is better saved for spring, once the roads have stopped throwing brine at everything.
Almost certainly industrial and rail fallout — airborne ferrous particles that land hot, embed in the clear coat and then oxidise. Metro Detroit's southwest and downriver side gets it worse than most places in the country. Soap will not touch it because the particles are below the surface. It comes out with an iron-dissolving decontamination followed by a clay treatment, and on badly loaded paint a light polish afterward.
Give it more lead time than you think. A car that has been under a cover since November usually needs a full decontamination before any correction, because eight months of storage dust plus whatever it carried in from last autumn is sitting on the clear. If you want paint correction done rather than just a wash and dress, book several weeks ahead of the third Saturday in August — the Woodward corridor's calendar means everyone in the region wants the same two weeks.
Partly. Washing, interior work and underbody flushing are fine in the cold. Paint correction, ceramic coatings, sealants, adhesives and most trim restoration have minimum working temperatures and will not cure or level properly in an unheated garage in a Michigan February. If the goal is coating work, it is better scheduled for a warmer window or a heated space. Say what you want done when you book and it gets scheduled honestly.
That is exactly the right question for this climate, and it is why a mobile service here has to be built for it rather than adapted to it.
