Everything about a West Michigan car in winter comes back to salt. Grand Rapids sits in the lake-effect belt downwind of Lake Michigan and takes a great deal more snow than the east side of the state, which means a great deal more road treatment — rock salt and brine on US-131, I-96 and I-196, and on the county and city streets underneath them. What makes it worse than the raw snowfall total suggests is the freeze-thaw. Grand Rapids crosses the freezing line repeatedly through a winter, so brine that has soaked into a rocker seam or the lip of a rear wheel arch does not simply sit there frozen and inert; it goes liquid again, wicks further in and keeps working. The counterintuitive part is the garage. A salted car parked overnight in a heated garage is worse off than one left out in the cold, because warmth and moisture are exactly what the chloride needs. Rust in Michigan starts at the bottom, in seams, and it starts under a car that looks perfectly fine from the driveway.
The interior takes its own version of the same problem. Snow melts off boots into the driver's carpet and the salt in it dries as a white crust that will re-bloom every time the carpet gets damp again, which is why vacuuming lifts the crust and leaves the salt exactly where it was, and why cleaning once in February and again in April is not redundant work. If the car will be at the kerb rather than in a drive, the appointment needs to be placed on a day when the legal side is also a workable side. A driveway, an alley pad or an off-street lot removes the problem entirely.

A February thaw feels like the moment, but there is almost always more treatment coming, and washing then just clears the way for a fresh load. Late March into April, around the time odd-even parking ends on 1 April, is the sensible window. That said, a car driven daily through a West Michigan winter benefits from contained washes during the season too — the chloride does not wait for spring.
Worse, for corrosion, which surprises most people. Chloride needs moisture and warmth to keep reacting. A salted car parked cold outside is at least partly inert overnight; the same car in a heated garage stays wet and warm, which is ideal conditions for what is sitting in the rocker seams and wheel-arch lips. A heated garage is genuinely better for the interior and the battery — it is just not doing the underside any favours unless the salt gets removed first.
Yes, and that is comparatively recent. Grand Rapids finished separating its combined sewers in 2015 after about twenty-five years of work, eliminating every combined sewer overflow point. Sanitary flow now goes to the treatment plant and stormwater goes to the river in its own pipe with nothing in between. Which means soap and road salt that reach a kerb inlet reach the Grand unchanged. The van reclaims its water and sends it to sanitary sewer instead.
