Hartford is salt-belt driving with a New England twist. Connecticut DOT pre-treats the highways through the metro — I-84, I-91 and Route 2 — with brine ahead of a storm and follows with rock salt during it, and the city and the towns around it do the same on the streets below. The twist is that a Greater Hartford winter is rarely one long cold spell. The valley sits close enough to the coast to take rain or sleet in the middle of a cold month, so the chloride film on an underbody gets rinsed, re-wetted and re-concentrated over and over instead of sitting frozen and inert, and whatever has worked its way into a tailgate seam, a rocker or the length of a brake line gets a fresh start with every swing.
