Sun, lovebugs and a canopy that drips: what Duval County does to paint

Two forces do most of the damage to a car in Jacksonville, and neither of them is dirt. The first is ultraviolet light, which never really lets up here. On a car that lives outdoors, UV hazes the clear coat on the roof, hood and trunk lid until it eventually starts to lift, and it burns through the factory coating on polycarbonate headlight lenses in a handful of years, after which the plastic itself oxidises and goes yellow. People who move here from further north are routinely surprised that a four-year-old car already has cloudy lights. The second force is lovebugs. Twice a year, roughly a stretch in late spring and another in late summer, the front bumper, grille, mirrors and leading edge of the hood get plastered on any drive down I-95 or across the Buckman. The mess is cosmetic; the chemistry is not. Lovebug remains are acidic, and baked onto a hot Jacksonville hood for two days they will etch clear coat permanently. Dry-scraping them, which is what most people do at a gas station, drives the abrasive parts across the paint and adds scratches to the etching.

Between those two, the calendar fills in the rest. February through April is oak and pine pollen heavy enough to turn a dark car yellow, and pollen holds moisture against the paint and clogs the cabin air filter. Summer is daily afternoon thunderstorms — a rinse with dirty water that dries into spots on a hot panel. Cars kept in Riverside, Avondale and Ortega sit under mature live oak canopy that drops far more than leaves: much of what people call sap under those trees is aphid honeydew, a sugary film that then grows a black sooty mould, and it bonds tight in the heat. At the Beaches and around Mayport, airborne salt goes on top of everything else. And year-round humidity means that a car with damp carpet — from beach sand, from a leaky sunroof drain, from a summer downpour with a window cracked — will grow mildew, and the smell will outlast several vacuum passes.

The practical geography here is unusual. Duval County is one of the largest municipal land areas in the country, which cuts both ways for a mobile service. Most of it is ideal: Mandarin, Southside, Baymeadows, Arlington and the Bartram Park corridor are detached houses with driveways and room at the curb, and nothing has to come out of the house to make the job work — which counts for more in this county than in most, because a great deal of older Duval property is on septic and there is no lawful place on the site to put wash water anyway. The older core is tighter work: Springfield's brick streets and narrow historic lots, Riverside and Avondale's short driveways hemmed in by oaks, Murray Hill's compact blocks. Downtown, Brooklyn and the Southbank towers have structured garages with clearance bars a service van will not pass, so cars come up to grade. The Beaches have small lots and weekend parking pressure. But the flip side of a county this size is that driving across it to a wash and back can eat half a day, which is the actual argument for having the work come to the car instead.

Premium on request

When "clean" isn't the goal — correction and coating.

Off the same vans, our senior technicians take dedicated slots for multi-stage paint correction and ceramic coating — at your Jacksonville address. This is a separate appointment with its own timeline, for owners who want depth of gloss and years of protection, not a wash.

Booked into premium slots and quoted after a paint assessment. Ask when you book and we assess the paint before quoting.

Jacksonville neighbourhoods we serve

Riverside, Avondale, Ortega, Murray Hill and Springfield on the west side of the river; San Marco, Mandarin, Southside, Baymeadows and the Bartram Park corridor to the south; Arlington and the Northside; and out east to the Beaches — Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach and Jacksonville Beach, which are separate municipalities inside Duval County rather than Jacksonville neighbourhoods. Duval County is enormous, so travel across it is a real scheduling factor rather than a formality.

Jacksonville questions

Asked often in Jacksonville, answered plainly.

Bad if you leave them. Lovebugs arrive in two seasons a year and coat the front bumper, grille, mirrors, windshield and leading edge of the hood. The problem is not the mess, it is the chemistry — the remains are acidic, and on a hot Jacksonville hood they will etch through clear coat within a couple of days. Scraping them off dry makes it worse. They need to be softened and lifted properly, and if they have already marked the paint the etching has to be polished out rather than washed away.

Nowhere near your septic system and nowhere near your yard. A lot of older Duval County property is still on septic, which is exactly why the van does not rely on the site for disposal. It carries its own water in, reclaims what comes off the car, and hauls the used water out for disposal to sanitary sewer. Your drain field, your storm drain and the St. Johns are all untouched by the job.

Coverage here has to be built around the fact that this county is bigger than most American cities by a wide margin. Crossing from Ortega to Atlantic Beach at the wrong hour is a serious piece of driving, so slots will be grouped by area rather than offered as though everything in Duval is fifteen minutes apart. Where you are will shape which times are available to you.

Florida UV. Headlight lenses are polycarbonate with a factory UV coating, and that coating has a service life measured in sun exposure, not years. Jacksonville sun burns through it much faster than a northern climate does, after which the plastic itself oxidises and goes yellow and hazy. It is correctable — the oxidised layer is sanded and polished back and re-protected — but it will return faster here than anywhere north of the state line if it is not protected afterward.

Some of it is genuine sap, but a lot of what people call sap under the canopy in Avondale, Ortega and Riverside is aphid honeydew — a sugary film that falls onto the paint and then grows a black sooty mould on top of it. It bonds tightly in the heat and it is not coming off with a normal wash. Combined with bird traffic in those canopies, cars parked under Jacksonville's old oaks need a different approach than a car in an open Mandarin driveway.

Generally yes. The van needs a space to sit adjacent to the car and nothing else — the water arrives with it and leaves with it, so a historic house with no exterior spigot and no driveway is much less of an obstacle than it looks. What Springfield does impose is limited swing room around the vehicle and sometimes a walk from wherever the van can legally stand on a brick street, which is worth flagging when you book so the right amount of time is allowed.
