Memphis is a heat city, and heat does its worst work where you cannot see it. This city sits on windblown loess bluffs, and loess is exceptionally fine silt — much finer than ordinary road grit, so it does not sit politely on the paint. It works into panel gaps, door seals and window channels, and the moment it rains it becomes a thin mud film across everything. Add the freight: this is the FedEx hub city, with heavy truck traffic pounding I-40 and I-240 through the interchange everybody here calls Malfunction Junction, and that traffic lays down brake dust and diesel soot that bakes onto wheels and lower panels in summer heat. Winter is short and salt use is limited compared with northern cities, so you will not see the rocker-panel rot that a Great Lakes car develops — but ice storms here are destructive when they land, and bridges and overpasses do get treated.

Memphis is the largest city in the United States that relies entirely on groundwater, pulling roughly 180 million gallons a day from the Memphis Sand aquifer — and the streams that carry this city's stormwater, the Wolf River, the Loosahatchie and Nonconnah Creek, actually lose water down into the shallow aquifer during parts of the year. What goes into a storm drain here does not simply leave. As for where it can work, Memphis is comparatively easy. Midtown bungalows in Cooper-Young, Central Gardens, Evergreen and High Point Terrace have deep driveways and, on many blocks, rear alleys to detached garages, which is the best setting of all. East Memphis, Cordova, Bartlett, Germantown and Collierville are straightforward driveway suburbs, though Germantown and Collierville covenants sometimes restrict commercial vehicles in a driveway, so read yours.
