San Diego is hard on cars in a way that hides itself, because the weather never looks like weather. The city averages roughly ten inches of rain a year and nearly all of it arrives between December and March, which means that for eight months of the year nothing rinses your paint. Brake dust off the stop-and-go on the I-5 and the I-8, road film, tree drip, construction dust — it lands, it bakes, it bonds, and because it accumulates evenly and gradually, most owners never notice the car has changed colour. Then the marine layer works the other side of the problem. Overnight fog through May Gray and June Gloom lays a salt-bearing dew across every panel from Ocean Beach to Coronado to La Jolla, and when the morning sun burns it off the water leaves and the salt stays. That is why cars within a few miles of the water go after their fasteners, wheel weights, brake hardware and stone-chip edges long before an inland car of the same age shows anything at all.
The seasonal insults are more specific.
