San Jose goes roughly six months without meaningful rain, and that is the part people underestimate about keeping a car clean here. From May through October the weather never washes anything off. What builds up instead is a fine dry film: road dust, brake particulate from stop-and-go on 101 and 880, whatever the sycamores and valley oaks drop over a Willow Glen street, and in a bad late-summer smoke season a layer of wildfire ash that turns alkaline and starts etching the moment it takes on dew. Then the first real storm arrives in October or November, lifts all of that into a greasy slurry, and dries it back onto the paint in streaks. Layer a summer that goes weeks at a time without a cloud over that cycle and the horizontal panels go first — roof, hood, rear deck — where clear coat hazes and eventually lifts. Interiors follow the same path. A dashboard baking all day in an open lot off North First Street runs far hotter than the air outside, and untreated vinyl and leather split along the top edge where the sun lands hardest.
What people drive here changes the work too. Silicon Valley runs one of the highest concentrations of electric vehicles in the country, and an EV is a different cleaning problem than a gas commuter. The reason a van makes sense in this city is that the parking is the constraint, not the car. Postwar Willow Glen, Cambrian and Almaden are straightforward: a driveway, shade, and no call on the house at all — in particular no call on your tap, which in a county that can be under a declared shortage in any given year is not a small detail. The newer housing is not so simple. The podium garages under the mid-rises along North First Street, near Berryessa and around Santana Row are posted with clearance bars a service van will not fit under, so the work moves to a visitor stall or the curb outside. Gated communities around Silver Creek and parts of Evergreen carry HOA language about vehicle work in driveways worth reading first. Naglee Park and the blocks around San Jose State run permit parking with posted sweeping days. And some of the most sensible work in this metro will not happen at a home at all — it will be in a Golden Triangle surface lot where the car sits in one stall for nine hours regardless, and it comes back clean without anyone giving up a Saturday.

They do, and that is exactly why nothing goes into them. The van carries its own water and reclaims what comes off the car. That reclaimed water is disposed of to sanitary sewer, which is treated at the regional wastewater facility — it never reaches a storm inlet, a gutter or the Guadalupe. If a storm inlet sits close to where the car is parked, it will be covered before any water comes out.
Almost certainly not. Podium and subterranean garages in the North San Jose mid-rises and around Santana Row are posted with clearance bars well under the height of a service van. The workaround is straightforward: the car gets brought up to a visitor space, a loading zone or the street outside, and the work happens there. Nothing about the process needs to be indoors.
Drought rules in Santa Clara County target water waste — free-running hoses, runoff into the street. This service never connects to a tap. The van arrives with a fixed volume of its own water, uses a fraction of what a driveway hose wash consumes, and takes the used water away with it. San Jose Municipal Code Chapter 15.10 is the local water waste prevention and shortage chapter, and it is what a declared shortage level operates through; if a specific restriction is in force it is worth confirming with the city, but a closed-loop wash is not a hose left running.
Read the covenant before booking. Many South Bay HOA rules are written against oil changes, brake jobs and fluid dumping — a self-contained wash that produces no runoff and leaves no trace is a different thing, and boards do not all read their own language the same way. But we will not tell you your HOA agrees. If it does not, an office park or a nearby permitted space works just as well.
Possibly. Wildfire ash is alkaline, and once it gets dew on it overnight it can begin etching clear coat, especially on the roof and hood where it settles thickest and bakes. Dry-wiping it is worse than leaving it — the particles are abrasive. It wants a proper lubricated wash and, if it has already marked the paint, a machine polish to level the etching.
For a lot of people here that will be the easier arrangement. The car sits in one surface stall from morning to evening, there is space around it, and no Saturday goes to it. All that is needed is somewhere the van can park adjacent and permission from whoever manages the lot.
