Gloss enhancement: depth back in the paint

Why it is worth doing

Paint that has been washed for years in the wrong order collects fine scratches — the halo you see around a streetlight or in direct sun. They are not in the colour, they are in the clear coat above it, and no amount of washing reaches them. A single polishing pass levels the very top of that clear coat so light reflects evenly again instead of scattering.

How the job runs

1. The paint is decontaminated first — this is why it needs Complete or Executive, not Refresh. Polishing a surface with bonded contamination on it grinds that contamination into the paint.
2. One machine pass with a cutting-and-finishing compound, worked panel by panel.
3. Wiped down with a panel prep so you are looking at the actual result, not filler.
4. Sealed, so the gloss you are looking at survives the next few washes.

What it will not do

One pass is one pass. It lifts light swirls, haze and dullness. It will not remove deep scratches you can catch a fingernail in, sanding marks, or etching that has gone through the clear coat — those need multi-stage paint correction, which is a different appointment with a different price.

Questions

How is this different from paint correction?

Depth of work. Gloss enhancement is a single pass that improves the finish in about 45 minutes on site. Multi-stage correction measures the paint, cuts in stages and refines — it takes hours, it is quoted after an assessment, and it removes defects this cannot.

Why can I not add it to Refresh?

Because polish needs a decontaminated surface. Refresh is a maintenance clean and does not include the decontamination step, so polishing over it would work contamination into the paint rather than removing defects from it. The booking form will tell you this rather than a detailer telling you at the door.

Will it fix the scratch my neighbour left?

Almost certainly not. Run a fingernail across it — if it catches, the damage is through the clear coat and polishing cannot bring that back. If it does not catch, there is a fair chance one pass improves it noticeably.

How long does the result last?

The correction is permanent — that clear coat has been levelled and does not un-level. How long it keeps looking that way depends on how the car is washed from here. Automatic brush washes will put the swirls back within a season.
